The Strategic Nothingness: Why "The Pause" is the Ultimate Leadership Protocol
In the Peak District, we have an old saying: "There’s still snow at the wall, so there is more to come" It’s a reminder that even when the calendar says Spring, the land isn't finished with Winter. Nature doesn't rush the transition; it protects the roots until the ground is ready.
In our professional lives, we often do the exact opposite. We try to run a "Spring Update" on a human system that is still frozen, exhausted, or, as I know from my own journey, operating in a state of survival.

From HMRC Investigator to Rest Guide: My Journey through the Crash
For nearly two decades, I operated within the high-stakes machinery of the Civil Service. From VAT inspections and hidden economy investigations to managing complex IT programmes and service delivery, I lived in a world of logic, deadlines, and high-pressure systems.
In 2018, a workplace incident triggered a diagnosis of Complex PTSD. While EMDR was vital in "fixing" the neurological processing of my brain, it left my body and soul bereft. I was a functional leader, but my internal system was blown.
I tried to do my way out of it. I moved into a CEO role for a charity I had founded, but I found myself recreating the very burnout conditions I had fled from at HMRC. It was only when I found Yoga Nidra, and witnessed the jaw-dropping transformation of people who finally stopped fighting their own bodies, that the lightbulb went on.
I realised that Rest isn't a luxury; it is a radical act of leadership.
Are you Stressed, or are you "Blown"?
In her research, Brené Brown makes a distinction that is a game-changer for workplace wellbeing. There is a profound difference between Stress and Overwhelm:
Stress is when we have too much to do, but we are still functioning within the system.
Overwhelm is being "blown." It is the point where our nervous system can no longer process information.
As a former IT Service Manager, I like to think of this as a system crash. When a server is overwhelmed, you don't ask it to run faster. You reset it.
The Science of Nothingness
Brené Brown’s research concludes that the only cure for overwhelm is Nothingness. Not a more efficient To-Do list. Not another wellness app. Just... nothing.
But for high-achievers, nothingness feels dangerous. We feel Shame. We feel naughty for resting when there is work to be done. We’ve been conditioned to believe that our worth is tied to our output.
